For all those that seem to think Paul is a pro in disguise, please realise the following. - Bath Opera is an amateur opera company staging a small number of productions a few times each year. - Paul has performed in just 4 four productions with this company - Paul has attended some masterclasses in Italy. These courses are designed for talented amateurs. All of these are paid for by those attending. - A few masterclasses, even one with the great man do not constitute "a formal opera training" by any stretch of the imagination. - Professional opera singers earn their living by treading the boards night after night week-in week-out, year after year with professional opera companies. - Paul, has never earned a single penny from opera performance, other than winning a tv talent show in 1999 - the winnings funding masterclasses. - Paul has not performed since 2003. - He is not a professional opera singer pretending to be a mobile phone sales man, but rather he is a mobile phone salesman aspiring to be an opera singer. - An operatic voice IS a trained voice. Hmmmm, perhaps if I can buy a few classes at a pro cookery school, I can pass myself off as a highly experienced pro chef.....hmmmmm......

In response to tomcane: Paul has also stated in interviews that he was not altogether happy with his performnce. He also said that he was very tense. The 'wobbling head' isn't causing the vibrato. The wobbling was caused by tension in the neck, not an uncommon technical probloem for singers. Bearing in mind who he was singing in front of after not having sung for 4 years, I can see why he was tense.

This audition in terms of anyone singing, it was just above average. In terms of classical music and opera, it was right at the bottom. He has had lessons because he stated it in an interview but I don't know what his teacher taught him because he doesn't have much technical ability. His italian needs a lot of work and shaking your head up and down to create a vibration effect is extremely fake. This is why he annoys me so much. He needs just too much work to be a good opera singer.

ok he is no Pavarotti but there is No reason in this world to say he's a clown ! What this man does in these few minutes is incredible !! congradulations to Paul !

i think he did quite well as he apparently never studied singing or anything but of course there is no comparison to professional opera singers like pavarotti btw can anyone tell me what text he is singing because the original lyrics are different

He's not a good OPERA singer. I'm not sure why he is so famous when there are people who are a million times better than him. And I certainly don't know why people have the nerve to compare him to Pavarotti. It's outrageous and he's a disgrace to all classical/opera singers. He's just a clown.
